Curaçao is a small island but there are many museums to safeguard the past and maybe understand the future. The kolonial history of Curaçao was a history of slavery and maritime developments. Curaçao has an outstanding natural harbour and is also of great strategic value for the world's commercial activities, connecting Europe with the Americas. This was reason enough for European countries to fight over it. Curaçao was first conquered from the Caiquetio Indians by Spain, and later England and Holland ruled for terms. The Dutch made it a slave depot, to ship over slaves arriving from Africa to the Americas. All these international influences and developments gave Curaçao and it's Capital Willemstad a rich history and culture, very well displayed at local museums.
